Ingredients

Cheese

Look for the Proudly Wisconsin Badge when shopping for cheese. Any brand of Wisconsin Cheese Curds can be used in this recipe.

Instructions

  1. Place cheese curds in a mesh strainer. Whisk buttermilk and beer in a large, deep bowl. Submerge curds in strainer into the buttermilk-beer mixture.
  2. Combine the flour, baking powder, salt and pepper in a separate shallow, large bowl.
  3. Heat oil in a Dutch oven or deep-fat fryer to 375°F. Remove curds from buttermilk-beer mixture; drain well. Dredge curds in flour mixture, shaking off any extra coating.
  4. Fry curds, in batches, in oil for 1-3 minutes on each side or until light golden brown. (Do not crowd.) Drain on paper towels. Serve immediately with dipping sauce if desired.

Recipe Tips

  • For best results, allow oil temperature to return to 375°F between frying each batch.
  • DIY Dipping Sauces: These fried cheese curds are great on their own or served with a tasty dipping sauce. Here are four easy options to try:
  • Sriracha Ketchup: 1/2 cup ketchup + 1 to 2 tablespoons Sriracha hot chili sauce
  • Chipotle Ranch: 1/2 cup prepared ranch dressing + 1 tablespoon chipotle-flavored hot sauce
  • Honey Mustard Aioli: 1/2 cup mayonnaise + 1/4 cup prepared mustard + 2 tablespoons honey
  • Lemon Dill Tartar Sauce: 1/2 cup mayonnaise + 1 teaspoon lemon zest + 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice + 1 teaspoon dill pickle relish + 1/2 teaspoon dried dill weed

Cheesemonger Tip

Select for cheesemonger info

Do you have questions when shopping for cheese? Ask the cheesemonger! A cheesemonger specializes in the buying and selling of high-quality cheese, usually available in the specialty section of a grocery store or cheese shop. Knowledgeable and passionate, a cheesemonger is a go-to resource for cheese varieties and pairings, proper cheese storage and handling, its cooking applications and cheese brand information.

Cheese curds are an essential part of the cheesemaking process. They're often pressed to form a cheese wheel or block. They're also a delicious snack all on their own, whether fresh or fried.
