  1. Heat oven to 350°F.
  2. Arrange bread in a single layer on two rimmed baking sheets. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until toasted, turning once. Cool completely on wire racks.
  3. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium-low heat. Add the apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves; cook and stir for 7-9 minutes or until apples are tender. Cool completely.
  4. Combine the apple mixture, bread, cheddar and ham in a large bowl.
  5. Whisk the eggs, milk, maple syrup, cinnamon and vanilla in another large bowl; pour over bread mixture, pressing down lightly. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight.
  6. Heat oven to 350°F. Transfer bread mixture to a greased 12-inch ovenproof or cast-iron skillet.
  7. Bake, covered, for 20 minutes. Uncover; bake for 15-20 minutes longer or until a knife inserted near the center comes out clean and a thermometer inserted into egg mixture reads 160°F. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving. Dust with confectioners’ sugar. Serve with maple syrup.

Cheesemonger Tip

Select for cheesemonger info

Do you have questions when shopping for cheese? Ask the cheesemonger! A cheesemonger specializes in the buying and selling of high-quality cheese, usually available in the specialty section of a grocery store or cheese shop. Knowledgeable and passionate, a cheesemonger is a go-to resource for cheese varieties and pairings, proper cheese storage and handling, its cooking applications and cheese brand information.

This cheddar delivers savory, tangy depth with warm notes of apple and cinnamon. Creamy yet slightly crumbly and rich, it is best served at room temperature so the flavors shine. Try it in this brunch dish, or with apples, toasted nuts or even your favorite apple pie for an easy, comforting bite.
